About Us

OUR HISTORY

Friendship House was established in 1964 as a volunteer service of the Teaneck Section of the National Council of Jewish Women.  From its start as a storefront operation staffed by dedicated volunteers, Friendship House has grown into a 30,000 square-foot center.  Our facility contains vocational training areas, a client dining room, areas for individual and private counseling and for socialization, a commercial kitchen, and administrative offices. Fifty-three professionals care for approximately 650 men and women each year.

Even though our size and facilities have expanded and changed over the years, our mission has remained constant.  We are a non-profit organization dedicated to serving and assisting persons with mental, developmental, or physical disabilities.  Our current services include:

  • Vocational and job training programs
  • Transitional and supported employment programs
  • Psychiatric evaluations
  • Medication management
  • Individual and group therapy by licensed therapists
  • Psychosocial support groups
  • Case management

THE REHABILITATION PROCESS

Individuals are introduced to Friendship House in an orientation program that familiarizes them with the programs and options that are available to them.

Upon enrollment, a counselor is assigned who, along with the member, will develop a tailored treatment plan designed to enable the member to improve skills related to work, interaction with family and peers, and managing community involvement.  Ultimate goals are job placement, satisfactory community living, and stress management.  Supportive services and follow-up are provided as the member increases his or her level of functioning.
