This program is dedicated to helping our members understand that they are each capable of achieving personal wellness and recovery through the proper identification and use of supports. We recognize that an important part of the return to independent living is the ability of an individual to interact with others in social situations.
We offer structured group activities five (5) hours per day, Monday through Friday. Our forty (40) scheduled groups address several wellness and recovery concepts in the following categories: Recreation, Activities of Daily Living (ADL) skills, Psychoeducation, Stress Management, and Community Inclusion. The subject matter discussed includes knowledge of one's illness and symptom management, benefits of treatment adherence, increased identification of existing coping skills and how to build upon and learn new skills, how to socialize with peers to lessen isolation and participate in healthy leisure time activities.
In addition, North Jersey Friendship House has a strong group component that addresses the needs of those with a history of substance abuse. These specialized groups allow members to learn about addictions and ways to manage cravings, avoid peer pressure, and prevent relapse.
The group program offers members an opportunity to learn from the facilitators and each other. Members are not only empowered by their personal successes, but by the feedback they get from others in the groups. In essence, group members are empowered to become teachers and mentors to their peers.
