Transitional Employment

Transitional Employment

Members who are potentially “job-ready” gradually progress to a transitional employment (TE) site in the community. Recognizing that this can be a difficult step, full and part-time training positions are obtained with employers who have been educated about mental illness and disabilities. Members begin training at the job site one or two days a week and gradually build up their ability to tolerate a full week.

About two dozen northern New Jersey businesses offer training to our members. Each day, we provide members with transportation to and from the work sites, as needed. Our Senior Employment Specialist accompanies the members (as needed) and may remain at the site to provide support and encouragement.
When ready, individual job placement can take place and the member is referred to DVR for Supported Employment Services.

Information for Employers:

Employers can either pay the TE Worker directly or they can have the TE Worker paid by North Jersey Friendship House and be covered by the North Jersey Friendship House’s Workman’s Compensation Plan. Monthly billing invoices are sent to the employer.

Note: Transportation to the employment site is provided free of charge to the employer.
